The use of quality wood is crucial for the Zowum collection. When properly sourced and selected, the natural material contains unique qualities which ensures gracefulness and durability for generations. With distinctive and natural structures, the material creates life and movement, making it the ideal choice for organically shaped furniture like Zowum.
It is important to be aware that no two trees are alike and the living material is continually changing. The colour and the texture will change in appearance over time as it becomes affected by the environment in which it is placed. In order to maintain the look, we advise you to read our maintenance and care guide.
Please note that the images shown are for guidance only. There will be colour and texture differences from the images shown to the furniture delivered.
Oak
Oak is a hard, robust and versatile wood type with open pores and a fine and distinct grain structure. It has been the superior construction material for mankind in thousands of years. When used for Zowum furniture the trees are between 100 and 200 years old when they are felled, however with some mother trees being much older. All oak used for Zowum furniture are selected European oak from FSC certified forestry.
Oak | Clear Oil
When treated with clear oil the tone of the oak is kept light, meaning that the wood’s original colour is maintained for longer and premature darkening is prevented. The oil also protects the surface of the wood and makes it more resistant to water and stains while leaving the structure visible and touchable. The oil is absorbed into the wood, creating a smooth surface with a silky touch.
Oak | Dark Oil
The dark oil treatment enhances the grain structure of the oak and provides it with a warm and darker tone. The dark oil is a natural oil based on virgin linseed oil. The oil protects the surface and makes it more resistant to water and stains while leaving the structure visible and touchable. The oil is absorbed into the wood, creating a smooth surface with a soft and natural feel to it.
Oak | Smoked
Smoked oak is an old way of treating oak. The dark brown colour comes when the natural content of tannic acid in the oak reacts with ammoniac. The colour can vary depending on the content of acid but is typically in an elegant matte dark brown. Finally, the smoked oak is treated with a dark oil. The oil is absorbed into the wood and creates a smooth surface with a silky touch. The oil protects the surface of the wood and makes it more resistant to water and stains.
Oak | Black Painted
A black paint is applied to the oak. The treatment protects the surface and makes it resistant to water and stains while leaving the grain structure visible.
Walnut
Walnut is a versatile hardwood, often with an elegant curvy grain structure which enhances the character of the wood. It is strong and stable and is well suited for fine furniture. The walnut used for Zowum furniture is carefully selected American Black Walnut. The trees are often solitude standing trees and not from a forest. Therefore, no forestry certification is provided for Black Walnut in the USA. In our production, we exclusively use American walnut sourced through suppliers that collaborate with AHEC.
Walnut | Oil
Walnut has a strong and rich hue which ranges from light golden brown to dark. The oil treatment protects the surface and makes it more resistant to water and stains while leaving the structure visible and touchable.
Ash
Ash is distinguished by its light colour and fine grain structure, which gives the wood a unique character. We use FSC® certified ash wood, which is available with two different treatments.
ASH I CLEAR OIL
The ash is either untreated or with a clear oil treatment that protects the surface from dirt and stains. The oil treatment does not significantly alter the appearance of the wood, but it does give the surface a soft, natural feel that is pleasant to touch. The oil is absorbed into the wood, leaving behind a smooth surface where the natural appearance of the wood is clearly visible.
Oregon Pine
Oregon Pine comes from slow growing firtrees on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. Oregon Pine is both durable and flexible, and the delicate grain structure is mainly uniform and straight. Oregon Pine comes from FSC certified forests in Oregon and Washington.
